La vision très libre de l’art de Dessi est sans doute une émanation de l’Arte povera mais surtout la manifestation de l’extraordinaire talent de scénographe, qui donne à son travail puissance, force et cohérence. Ses oeuvres à la fois rigoureuses et ironiques sont des clins d’œil au rôle de l’art, des maîtres et du passé.
Gianni Dessi s’est débarrassé des règles de l’art pour repenser sa création comme une réflexion sur la nature de l’art.

Gianni Dessi est né à Rome en 1955, il fait partie de la génération post Arte Povera qui effectue un grand retour vers le pictural à travers la peinture en explorant ses possibilités infinies.
Après des études de scénographie à l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de Rome, Gianni Dessi collabore avec le théâtre d’avant-garde, puis participe à de nombreuses expositions en Italie et à l’étranger.
Représenté à la Biennale de Venise de 1984, 1986 et 1993, Gianni Dessi développe et modifie progressivement son langage artistique en faisant dialoguer peinture et sculpture.
En 2014 Dessi a travaillé à Beijing dans le cadre d’un projet monumental installé à Parkview Green où plusieurs de ses sculptures y occupent l’espace public.
2017 – 2019 Gianni Dessi est Président de l’Accademia di San Luca à Rome
A la fin des années 1970, il collabore avec des groupes de l’avant-garde théâtrale tout en développant une peinture épaisse mêlant divers matériaux et organisée généralement autour d’un élément central proéminent. Il expose régulièrement en Italie et ses œuvres sont présentes dans de nombreux musées et collections internationales (Groninger Museum, MoMA, Les Abattoirs Toulouse, Saint-Etienne Mam ).
Les peintures, qui ont été au cœur de sa création depuis la fin des années 1970, deviennent presque des objets dans lesquels caoutchouc, ciment ou surfaces noires sont pris dans une résine brute. Les sculptures quant à elles sont présentées selon des modalités très précises, utilisant systématiquement des aplats noirs ou jaunes, sur l’œuvre, son socle ou le mur qui lui sert de scène.
