font=’entypo-fontello’ custom_id= » av_uid=’av-ge2sb’] J.-Francis Lecoultre est né dans une famille d’artisans de haut niveau : son père, son oncle et une de ses sœurs sont graveurs, horloger et orfèvres. Il suit les cours de l’Ecole d’Art de la Chaux-de-Fonds, ville de haute culture, marquée par la présence de Le Corbusier et de Charles L’Eplattenier. Un événement artistique détermine peut-être le futur bijoutier à devenir peintre : la décoration de l’Hôtel de Ville du Locle par Ernest Bieler en 1922 (fresque Les Heures). Son chemin croisera à nouveau celui de Biéler en 1932 et en 1933-34, puisqu’il fera partie de son équipe de mosaïstes pour La Paix, au Locle, et à Savièse, pour l’église Saint Germain. En 1925, voilà donc J.-F. Lecoultre à Paris pour se former. Il a vingt ans. Jusqu’en 1939, sa carrière se déroule entre la capitale et la Suisse, entre peinture, sculpture (modelage) et arts décoratifs : expositions aux Salons des Indépendants, au Salon International de la Médaille, expositions collectives ou personnelles à Vevey, à Lausanne. La Seconde guerre mondiale va mettre fin à cet élan prometteur : après la mobilisation, il ne quittera plus Clarens, où il a fondé une famille. Modeste, à l’écart de la vie artistique vaudoise, oublié, il ne cesse pourtant pas de peindre – des paysages au pastel, sa technique de prédilection. Entre Hodler et Biéler, maîtres admirés, quelle place un jeune peintre peut-il prendre ? De sensibilité vive, de caractère rebelle, il porte son choix sur le pastel, technique difficile qui tient du défi, médium rare, peu commercial, liant d’un seul geste le trait incisif à la couleur, alliant la précision du trait à la douceur de l’estompe qui fusionne délicatement les nuances. Le Léman « miroir de l’âme », « miroir  du monde » pour lui ? Douze vues du Mont Grammont ouvrent une autre perspective : l’émerveillement devant le surgissement dans la lumière d’une montagne immémoriale, voire sacrée comme le Mont Fuji, bien que le peintre se dise « chasseur d’effets ».
